Errata:
- During reconciliation of the active ham numbers, I noticed an error. This has been corrected.
DECs will be getting updated lists shortly.
News:
- Changing frequency for WInlink and JS8call to 3567 (center frequency for
Winlink)
- Reading that people can be hesitant to join a net, I will be publishing the net logs to the site
so people can see who they may be talking with. This will be a rolling repot and will update
after each net's report. In addition, I will post the list of new licensees to this list every
month for the prior month.
Please welcome anyone on the list.
- While I think the ARES courses give a good basic foundation, I believe there are some others
that could be helpful. I'm thinking courses on public speaking and technical writing could
enhance our ability to communicate.
- Having a "dictionary" of terms and pronunciations specific to our partners' needs would also
help. For example, while working at GE, I was in the area making steam turbines. These were like
steel pinwheels pushed by steam. To us, we might call those pinwheel shapes blades, or vanes. GE
called them buckets. While not something we would call for in an emergency, I use it to point
out the large differences in terms. Then there is the pronunciation aspect. Both sides of the
conversation need to know how to spell and pronounce those terms.
- In researching the ability to have a state-based Winlink Gateway (my site has been approved so
testing on that will happen in August), I found out about new sets of Winlink gateways (public
is the default and
visible but there is one for emergency services and a Federal one). I will be updating the website with more information as I go through it all.
- I also have contacts to reach out to in other states, ones who face more emergency situations
than we do, to find out how they prepare and the exercises they engage in.
