VARA

Created by EA5HVK, the Vara suite is a series of weak signal transmission modes. VaraC uses these in their suite and this is an option in the WinLink express software. Please note that while free, to use the full speed of the software you need a license.

VaraHF can be used to send to a gateway or point-to-point. It can use 500Hz and still deliver a fast response. When you go to pick a site, you will have the option of updating the propagation forecast, allowing you to pick the gateway based on both bandwidth and your best chance of sending a message.

In the Vara family are Vara FM and Vara Sat for handling comms for FM or satellite. He also has a Chat and Terminal application.

If you are looking for a fast transmission or just to check out the options, visit the Vara Modem page. I have used it in both the free and paid versions, and the speed difference is noticeable between the two, but just having the propagation is a good reason to check out this software.

    DigiPi Review

Let me begin this review with some context. I am a firm believer in the need for emergency communications. I also know that voice alone is an inefficient way to convey information. Digital modes let us send that information quicker, without the need to spell things phonetically. This allows for more accurate communications, which means…

The Automatic Packet Reporting System is a tool we have available. You have probably heard of this reporting location, (Automatic Position Reporting System). It can send so much more. This protocol also allows the use of forms for both sending…

While this is a summary, you can use these links to get more information: FT8, JS8, Winlink, APRS, WSPR, FLDigi, and VaraC. “Quick Hits” In this category are things like radiograms…

  • Ham Radio Deluxe

I have to use different types of rig control, but my favorite is Ham Radio Deluxe. It has the best interface I have found and a direct connection for WSJT and JS8Call. I can control all aspects of my IC-7100 using the interface. Since it runs on my touchscreen laptop, the larger screen lets me…

  • FT8

One of several modes in the WSJT-X suite (this is where you will find WSPR). This mode was designed to send signal reports, and there is some DX activity with it. Like WSPR, you will get a signal report, although for WSPR, you need to go to the spotter site. How we will use it…
